That distinction matters.

The more important signal is how the company describes the work customers want done.

The language is no longer centered on occasional prompt usage. It is centered on Frontier, ChatGPT Enterprise, Codex, and company-wide AI agents. That framing tells you OpenAI believes the next wave of spend comes from embedding AI into recurring business processes.

That lines up with the product layer too:

The takeaway is simple. OpenAI is no longer selling just intelligence on demand. It is selling fewer handoffs.

Google keeps pushing Gemini into the existing work surface

Google's mid-April updates are a different version of the same thesis.

The clearest example is that Gemini AI features are now included in Google Workspace subscriptions, with Gemini available across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, Drive, and more. Google is also layering higher-capacity AI expansion tiers on top of that base.

Anthropic is pushing beyond chat into delegated knowledge work

Anthropic's Claude Cowork is one of the more important product moves in the market because it makes the same underlying argument more explicitly: many valuable knowledge-work tasks are too complex to manage through ordinary back-and-forth chat.

Cowork is positioned to handle multi-step work on a user's behalf, especially around research synthesis, document preparation, and file-heavy tasks. Anthropic also announced Claude Opus 4.7 on April 16, reinforcing its message around longer-running, harder tasks that users increasingly want to hand off with confidence.

This is important because it pushes the category beyond faster answer generation.

Anthropic is effectively saying that the next useful AI surface is one where the user defines the outcome and the system handles more of the execution path.

Microsoft is tightening the stack around governed AI execution

Microsoft's recent moves also fit the workflow-compression pattern.
